A Look Inside The FCS Freedom Leash
We’ve reviewed it and now FCS have – somewhat – unveiled the bungee cord creation process.
A few months back, we were handed two FCS Freedom Leashes in our Bondi abode and told that the simple legrope was about to undergo a revolution. At the time we were sceptical, as the cord you tie to your ankle doesn’t seem to correlate too highly with surf performance, nor did the leggy sit at the top of our list in things wrong with surfing.
As it turned out though, that little bungee rope they called the Freedom Leash isn’t all just smoking corporate mirrors – read the full review here.
The term leg-‘rope’ has never been more literal.

Two years seems like an excessive time to create a leash – maybe it is – but at the end of the day they’ve created something that’s about as hi-fi as a leggie could be. It tangles a little less, coils easily into your hand and hasn’t flown back to hit one of us square in the dome – so far.
The above video gives a visual explanation of both the manufacturing process and the R & D required throughout the two year ordeal. It might come across a little corpo at times, but you can’t tell me you didn’t learn something a tad exciting about just how intricate the simple leggy can be.
You need a little more help than nan to knit this together.
“A highly tensile nylon yarn is braided over an internal PU cord, resulting in a thinner, lighter and stronger cord”.
The leash construction also undergoes a little bit of fancy strength and durability testing. That isn’t all the testing undergone though, of course, the leash was also tested by the FCS team (Mase, Jules, Kolohe and more) where it actually matters – outside of the lab and in the surf where you’ll be using it.
The leash definitely won’t help you stomp backside airs, but it might just reduce the tangle around your ankles on the paddle back out.
