Think You Can Take off Behind the Rock at Snapper?
This is what was on offer at Snapper Rocks this morning. The Gold Coast is often a lake during the festive season – it being a little early for cyclones – but this Xmas has been rife with quality surf. Snapper Rocks is one of the most crowded waves on the planet. However, there’s one redeeming feature for the gifted locals: taking off behind the rock. Taking off behind rock requires launching yourself over the ledge of a warbling, backwashy sheer drop, right in front of a barnacle-encrusted rock. You see everyone scratching trying to take off on the shoulder in this photo? Dingo’d be setting his line about to backdoor that section. Think you’re going to jump off a plane, paddle up past Parko and the boys and slot into your dream Snapper tube? Good luck.
