Seabass, aka Sebastian Zietz, just won the Vans Triple Crown. He’s also the world tour’s newest qualifier. After winning the Reef Hawaiian Pro, he was unofficially on the dream tour – then he made the final of the Vans World Cup of Surfing, and it became a certainty. The two steamtrain results put him in front of the Vans Triple Crown ratings, early on. Yesterday, Seabass beat fellow 2013 qualifier Glen Hall in round one of the Billabong Pipe Masters. He faced Travis Logie in heat six of round two this morning and was victorious. Which, as it happens, secured him the Triple Crown win. He then washed off the beer shower, paddled out at Pipe and beat John Florence. Which might be his greatest feat of all in the last few weeks. What d’you think he’s more thrilled about – the glory, the $100k prize money, the $10k Nixon Watch, or the Harley Davidson that Vans gifed this year’s Triple Crown champ? Judging by the passion the kid carries himself with, Stab thinks the glory. Just one of many men to watch in this event. When Pipe’s on, there ain’t a dull heat in the bunch.
