“My feet have never been more numb, and I hadn’t even paddled out,” says our photographer Marcus Paladino from Canada. “While crossing a river, my gumboots filled up with ice cold water… Canadian surfer problems.”
Every time you think you’re cold before, during or after a surf, think of Canada. Think of Marcus. And think of Pete Devries. Pete’s a surfer who, if you didn’t know him personally, would be rather difficult to identify, given that he’s consistently covered head to toe in debilitatingly-thick rubber.
“This day was the first time I met Pete,” says Marcus. “And he’s as friendly and modest as he looks in all his surf edits. As strange as this may sound, I ended up offering my booties for him to use this session. He happily accepted, and I had the bragging rights to say “My booties did an air reverse today.”
