Matt Meola, Rocky Point revolver, Hawaii

Matt Meola, pictured here, lives on Maui. And, he likes it there. But when it’s winter in Hawaii, and the surfing world’s collective eye focuses on the North Shore of Oahu, it’s hard not to end up there at some point. “Meola made the quick jump over to the North Shore for the premiere of John John’s new move DONE,” says photog Ryan Miller. “The movie premiere was supposed to be last night, but with rain threatening, it got pushed back to Wednesday. Meola is making the most of his time here by tearing Rocky Lefts apart. I was out there bobbing around with a water housing and this guy was impressing me every single wave. He gives every wave 100 percent. I was baffled at how he never kicks his board away. In his head, every single air is a potential make. He tries to stomp everything, no matter how scary the landing. That commitment was quite incredible to watch firsthand and it payed off dividends in the West Oz section in John John’s movie where Meloa, John John and Albee go absolutely loony above the lip.” DONE might just be movie of the year. Keep both eyes out for it.
