“I’ve been close a lot of times in this thing, but I’ve never real put it to bed,” said Kelly Slater, immediately after winning his first final of the Quiksilver Pro, France at truly excellent la Graviere. “This is why you surf (for situations like this). I like being part of pushing yourself. I was so stoked to make a final with Dane, it’s really something special for me today.”
That’s Dane Reynolds in the red, pouring champagne down Kelly’s neck, with John Florence and Joel Parkinson to the right (the latter of whom moves to number one on the world tour). Not only did Kelly add his 51st WT victory to his list, but he also moves himself into second on the world tour rankings. But, the Floridian knows exactly what’s up with the ratings. “If I didn’t get past Parko today, it was really gonna put a lot of pressure back on me,” said Kelly. Oh Portugal, you can’t come soon enough.
