Kelly Slater, West Oz alleyoop, Australia

Kelly Slater is everywhere right now. Well, he’s in West Australia at this moment. But, everywhere as in, he’s been lighting up so hard every session in Aus (Ours, The Box) that it’s hard to miss him. “Kelly’s been having a good sniff around WA,” says photog Ryan Miller, who fired off this mid-oop study of Kell yesterday. “I think this guy really, really likes to surf. A solid performance at the box yesterday and then today he was out throwing punts into the wind on some small rights. This wave was actually a left but either he didn’t like the big pack sitting on the left, or he preferred the wind blowing into the rights – either way, he ended up going right as much as, or more, than he went left.” And on one of those rights he threw this – a picture-perfect full-rote alleyoop, a trick that until a coupla years ago was a rarity, but is now the norm and, really, the only acceptable way to do the spin (rather than it’s 180 variation). And Kelly’s done some of the best – against Chris Davidson in Portugal, at Bells Beach and, most incredibly, the pre-event monster he stomped in Rio. And y’better believe there’s more to come.
