Yesterday at the Billabong Pro, Tahiti, Kelly Slater breezed through his first heat with a 5.50 and an 8.50. He beat Brett Simpson and surprisingly dangerous wildcard, Ian Walsh. It wasn’t picturesque Chopes, but it was contestable and, uh, yeah… it was contestable. Let’s leave it there. And although smaller Chopes is a goofyfoot domain generally, you never, ever bet against Kelly. Today he surfs against Anthony Walsh again, in the seventh heat of round three. It’s cleaner than yesterday, perhaps a shade bigger, and Kelly, as you can see here, is relaxed as can be. Luke Munro, who is a pal of Kelly’s and competed against him for some time, believes that after Fiji (where Kelly won, convincingly), Chopes is his strongest event. Look at the relaxed smile. The sun bouncing over that hypnotic dome. The plunging green valleys. The crisper-than-chlorine water. Man alive! Ain’t it true?
