Kelly Slater And A Fine Disregard For Doctor’s Orders, Gold Coast
Do-it-yourself rehab program revealed yesterday.
Kelly Slater’s grom-level surf addiction might just be his undoing. Born with scoliosis and suffering the debilitating destruction of several decades worth of high performance surfing, it’ll likely be a failing spine that puts an end to his competitive career. Last week, after removing himself from the Brazilian event, the 45 year-old revealed an acceptance of mortality. During a Proximity Q&A session, he stated that in its current condition, his body is “not going to be winning a title,” and that on the recommendation of WSL medical professional Chris Presser, he needs an immediate three month break. Missing his fave (and sponsored) Fijian event is non-negotiable so Kelly gave him four weeks.
Yesterday Gold Coast lensman Jesse Little captured Kelly during his first week of therapy. Spinning high above an evening scene, it would seem that the man’s treatment might have been pushed aside thanks to a dreamy run of easterly energy. Stab adores Mr Slater’s everlasting enthusiasm!
“I was surfing this beachy with a friend when I saw Kelly checking it from his luxury balcony,” recounts the photog. “My mate was telling he’s been going out just before dark when the crowd thins out. And yesterday, right on cue, he appeared. I grabbed the camera and this was the first thing I shot. I wanted to wait and ask him who his physiotherapist was and if I could get his number, because that back of his certainly isn’t looking too sore!”
