Kalani Chapman, yesterday, late-afternoon Pipeline.
Yesterday was the best Pipe day of the season so far. Ten-to-12 feet out of the west and offshore. The surfer of the day was local Kalani Chapman. He surfed all day long on a 9’0″ and netted the best caves of the day. “That’s what those local guys do,” said Luke Egan. “When it’s really good, they’ll put the most time in and get the best waves. I bet Kalani surfed from seven till five without coming in.” With many surfers still on Kauai for Andy Iron’s service, the Reef event running at Haleiwa and Jamie O out with a broken arm, the Pipe specialists dominated. Joel Parkinson agreed that Kalani was the standout surfer. “Mate, he fucken ruled it yesterday,” he said. “He sat there on his big board and he only didn’t make one. He made so many good waves. And, he always got the biggest waves of the day.” How many did he get? The always-excited Taj Burrow was most impressed in the retelling of stories. “He got the huggest barrels,” he said. “Huuuge! I reckon I saw him in 150 pipes.” Today, the conditions on the North Shore have pulled back to four-to-six feet.
