Jordy Smith, lunge to lounge at Huntington Beach, CA
“Most of the competitors were out before the 8am start testing boards and fins,” says photog Quinn Matthews from the US Open of Surfing. “The sun never came out and there was a cloud of dust over the contest site, as thousands of kids poured in to roam around the many booths. It was a freakshow. The people-watching was almost as good as the surfing. Which is part the reason I didn’t get many shots – I ventured around with Noa Deane, Sam Orozco, Pat Schmidt and Leon Legot, looking for good instagram and vine posts.” One of the shots that Quinn did fire was this totally laid-back detonation starring Jordy Smith. The big South African is rolling off a runner-up in Ballito, and is certainly gonna be looking to get one back on Julian Wilson, who beat him in South Africa and won this event last year.
