Jarrah Tutton, Bondi Beach, Australia

Bondi Beach, in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, has been treated to uncharacteristically good waves for the past fortnight. With 12 days left of winter, you can call that the coldest month’s defiant last stand. Or something else, whatevs. The south end bank (‘Backpackers rip,’ as it’s so commonly referred to as by lifeguards on hit TV show, Bondi Rescue), has been as reliable as a nun with collection basket. Jarrah Tutton (pictured here, blowing the fins over said bank), is a man of the world, a gypsy who feels itchy if he’s in one place for too long. Travel funds come from promoting music tours, teaching SUP, modelling, anything that’ll allow him to surf and spear-fish through the day, or punch back up to Coolangatta (where he’s originally from) if he sees a swell coming. Though he’s called the streets of Bondi home for the last coupla years, he’s a Cooly kid at heart. Nick Sheffield, who fired of this shot, says: “Jarrah’s always talking about his beloved position behind the rock at Snapper, which he’ll fly up for on basically every good swell that hits the place. He’s equally good in a big pit as he is in the small rampy stuff. I’ve shot with him on a few trips down the South Coast and he’s got one of the best tube riding styles I’ve ever seen. He’s always super casual, soul arching in pits that most would be too scared to pull into.”
