The flash shoot is all about timing. “Why couldn’t we have gotten here earlier?” quizzed the surfer pictured here, Ian Gentil. A rare short period wind swell had been putting up cushy ramps over a sinister reef in what was one of the few genuine opportunities on the trip for the kids to show their aerial wares. Because, child, we wouldn’t have been able to use the flash earlier. And the light was too sucky to shoot anything else…was the response. Ian’s personal filmer, Elliot Leboe was the man charged with holding and firing the lightbox. Photographer, Jimmicane Wilson would yell the kids into waves from the boat barking at them to “not get barreled” and as they hit the section Ziff! would go the flash and Whirrr! Jimmicane’s Canon on the boat. In a 30-minute window, this was the best we got. – Jed Smith
