Dane Reynolds lost both of the heats he surfed at the Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast over the weekend. In the first heat, he was beaten by Adam Melling and Joel Parkinson. In the second, which went down this morning, and when this photograph was taken by Ryan Miller, he was beaten by Taj Burrow.
But, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t the most exciting surfer to watch. As is his approach, Dane blew his tail out repeatedly, hit the most critical section of every wave and went for broke, first turn, every time. But also as is his approach, he’d often bog on the second turn or loose his way on the following bottom turn. It’s why he had everyone on the beach on their toes, why his webisodes get more hits than anyone else’s and why he is, aside from Kelly Slater, the most well-know surfer in the world: Uncertainty. You never know what you’re gonna get. But more often than not, it’s glorious.
Since Dane was only surfing as a wildcard at Snapper and has opted outta the 2012 ASP World Tour, we won’t see him in a contest jersey again for some time. But, looking at turns like this, hopefully it’s sooner rather than later.
