Don’t be surprised Brett Simpson won his second consecutive US Open and US 100k winner’s cheque today. Huntington is a beach with many nuances. And Brett, who told Stab after winning the event last year he’d surfed the wave “three or four times a week for the last six years,” has the wave dialed better than anyone.
“It’s a south-facing beach, so you see all the sets down the beach first. The sets come down the line quick and you can gauge off that how it will break. The bigger lefts flow with the current. You can sit at Rob [Machado’s] little area and get a big left and do one big turn, then another into the right that runs at you. There is another left 50 yards off the pier, which you can do two turns on, then, if it’s bigger, shoot the pier or get the reform when its smaller. There’s also these against the grain rights… with one section then a big ramp,” he told Stab last year.
As for what won him the event this year, Brett says he kept his “wave count up…I kind of stayed conservative and built my scores.”
