Sharks are one of the most ancient and successful groups of predators in Earth's history. The earliest known shark-like fossils, such as the Cladoselache, are about 420 million years old, and share many features with those of modern sharks. Sharks swam long before the dinosaurs but had the smarts to retreat deep when flaming hot asteroids entered the firmament, annihilating some 75% of the planet’s fauna on impact with the Yucatán Peninsula. The period following the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction saw something resembling a millions-year-long Electric Acid Shark Test, if you will, where evolutionary forces selected for innovative genes that expressed serrated teeth, streamlined bodies, and sharpened electroreceptive senses evident in many high-ranking sharks of the modern era, such as White Pointers, Hammerheads and Tiger Sharks. Photo by Aimee Jan.
