Watch: Surfers Get Staunched By Tiger Shark In Bali
“Sharks never cross my mind in Bali, that has definitely changed…”
Bali is not known for its shark attacks.
There’s been five of ‘em since 1990, none fatal. Nearly all of them have occurred in Uluwatu at the southernmost tip of the Bukit – near the monkey temple.
There’s a chance that if you buy into that 5 storey, 120-room Cube eyesore slated to be built on the cliff (petitioned against with over 3222 signatories), you’ll be able to see the next one while your Russian neighbors blast donk and sip Kvass poolside.
Yesterday Varun Tandjung, son of Indonesian surf royalty Rizal posted a video surfing nearby Nyang Nyang’s — a right just around the headland from Ulus. An average wave by Indonesian standards, accessible by 600 steps from the top of the cliff i.e. leave the Sampoernas at home.
Varun was surfing the break for an hour before a Tiger shark mauled a sea cow (dugong) only feet from his toes.
“Yeah it was definitely a crazy moment! I was paddling out at my home break on the south side of The Bukit and I saw a big tiger shark attacking a dugong in the channel. It was super aggressive and there was a lot of splashing which kept creeping closer and closer to the inside. It was my first encounter with a shark in Bali and I have never seen anything like that before. Sharks never cross my mind when I surf in Bali but this has definitely changed my perspective,” he told Stab.
A shame JP Azevedo wasn’t there to give it a rear naked.
