Watch: Nat Young’s Live Reaction To The 4.03 Debacle

“That’s like almost a joke”

If you glanced at your phone last week, you probably recall Nat Young’s 4.03.

Reposted on Instagram by the springloaded goof, the blatant Challenger Series underscore in question incited a digital riot from commenters with credentials ranging from World Champion to WSL Commentator.

“Time to stick a camera and microphone in the judges booth,” said Julian Wilson. “This is rubbish.”

In a rare play, the WSL issued a formal redaction of the score.

“The Head Judge and Nat met for a heat review and watched all of the waves from Nat, Mikey and Charly. It was recognized and acknowledged that Nat’s 4.03 was in fact underscored and the wave should have been in the 5 or 6-point-range. Even though it was not the 7.21 that Nat needed to get into an advancing position, we still wanted to acknowledge the error.“

You can read our full analysis of the situation here and, above, you can watch an inside look at the real-time reaction + afterthoughts from Santa Cruz’s blondest pendulum.

Featuring Nat, Nolan Rapoza, Alyssa Spencer, and Levi Slawson, the cleverly coined ‘Wet Shoulder League’ depicts Matt Myers’ crew of mentees in their efforts to qualify for the CT.

If you recall, Matt is the measured tactician behind Cole Houshmand’s indelible CS run, and has become a trusted voice of reason on our site.

If you, like Big Dick Power Surfer, believe that the CS may be eclipsing the CT in entertainment value, the above is a worthwhile look into the preparation and b-sides associated with attempting to qualify for the CT.
