Tom Curren, Mason Ho, And Conner Coffin Find More Wonky Wedges
Weird waves set to the sound of Curren’s “guitalele”.
I once saw Tom Curren open up for Donavon Frankenreiter at a sold-out concert — almost nobody knew who Tom was, and he didn’t care.
This is THE Tom Curren, the man my father’s generation still has “surf crushes” on; the three-time world champ, the blueprint of style, the GREAT BAMBINO.
Yet, fame or recognition seems to be the last thing Tom cares about. He seems downright reclusive, mysterious even — like a salty Professor Dumbledore or something. He strolled out alone on stage, played a mellow set with just his guitar, packed up, and retreated back into the crowd.
You can see a little bit of that aura in this edit. He rides weird boards alongside Mason and Connor in bouncy, novelty wedges — just in front a majorly frequented tourist attraction in San Francisco.
Nobody surfs this wave, but the fellas make it look quite fun.
Tom also gets a jam session started playing a “guitalele” — a guitar/ukulele hybrid — with Connor on rhythm and Mason smacking his watch on a tin can.
This edit is a sort of outtake from Ripcurl’s film, In The Band: The Search Live in San Francisco. These b-sides are often just as enjoyable as the real film itself, as they present the characters in a less curated manner, which shows their true selves.
This clip is a tiny joy for the Curren fans among us.
