“This Is So Weird, I’m In Zoom Class And I Was In A Fucking Keg Like 2 Minutes Ago”

Is remote work the best thing that ever happened to surf culture?

One could argue in either direction. Sure, our lineups might now be flooded with tech bros and born-again adult learners, but that’s been inevitable for some time. For underground cone-lords like Jade Morgan, digital freedom has allowed him to create clips like this — and for that, we’re thankful.

For his new edit, the 25-year-old takes us along on a dreamy, twin-fin only tour of Central America — and does it all while enrolled in classes.

Circa 9:57am and 59 seconds

“The best day of the whole trip, I dawn patrolled one of the outer reefs, and then got home at like 9:30. I grabbed my board for a quick session, and ended up getting that last left in the clip. It was 9:57 when I got that wave, and I had class at 10am. I was in class trying to keep it together, I had so much excitement. I was thinking “This is so weird, I’m in this Zoom class and I was in a fucking keg like 2 minutes ago (laughs).””

So why does Jade wear a helmet at a playful beachbreak? To protect all of that sacred academia he has stored up there? Not quite.

“I’ve basically had head injuries my whole life. I split my head open a handful of times when I was younger, and got a bunch of concussions. Then I got into a gnarly car accident when I was 17, and when the doctors did brain scans they found an aneurysm.” says Jade

The Pascuales incident in question.

“I had to switch everything up. I stopped skating, stopped snowboarding, and started focusing on surfing. It was inevitable though, I kept hitting my head. I was surfing Pascuales a few years ago, and my rail domed me in the eye socket. After that I decided to just start wearing a helmet. A few months later, I got into a pretty heavy situation where I was bouncing on dry reef, and I realized the helmet probably saved my life. I was completely alone and I broke my back. If I’m surfing by myself, I feel like my helmet is my friend.”

Fortunately, Jade’s back is now healed, and we’re looking forward to seeing more from him soon.

For now, enjoy this, our conical Christmas gift to you.
