The Bobby Quad Gets French Kissed
Charly Quivront gets star-crossed on four fins.
What began as a whim in Charly Quivront’s Hawaii-bound board bag has turned into an international love affair.
Last winter, Charly, a talented French surfer, fell head over heels on the Channel Islands Bobby Quad, designed with input from the man himself on another continent, during 10 straight days of pure pleasure at Rocky Point.
Normally an avid 5’9 believer, Charly journeyed into 5’3” territory with a slight hesitation. His time on the quad, captured on film by Julien Turpaud, led him to practically pop the question to the thing after a trip to Indonesia. If you got waves like this, wouldn’t you?
Here’s what Charly had to say on his new favorite board: “I love how well it keeps speed and flow through the dead parts of the waves. Due to the board’s short rail, in my case being a 5’3, it’s so easy to place the board in the critical part of the wave, even when only thigh high. I kind of expected it to be good in small surf because that’s what Bobby made it for, and it was really great. What was the big surprise was that I learned it’s also amazing in the barrel, holding so well. Pretty impressive how good this board can go in bigger waves but it’s the smallest board I’ve ever had.”
That’s right: The board designed for backside bashing on waist-high Santa Barbara sneakers is just really damn fun everywhere else. CI knows how to pick ’em.
