Sydney Olympic Park To Open Wavepool 2023
URBNSURF takes on Homebush.
Sydneysiders, listen up. We all know how horrendous surfing in the city beaches is. Crowded, fickle and lawless.
There’s two things that you should know immediately.
The first is, good on you for continuing to surf despite the chaos of paid beach parking, shithouse wave quality and crowd-factor. If you can squeeze enjoyment out of that lemon, your life will be nothing but Mojitos when you get gentrified out of the Eastern Suburbs and join the northbound pilgrimage.
The second is that you are getting two new wave parks within an hour’s drive of Grassy Knoll. One at Wiseman’s Ferry that we have already covered extensively, the other is an URBNSURF development at Sydney Olympic Park.
URBNSURF will be using an iteration of Wavegarden’s Cove technology used in Melbourne to deliver waves up to two metres high every eight seconds, equalling 10 to 12 rides an hour for surfers. Plus, there will be a rooftop bar, cafe, yoga studio and skate park. The park will run on 100% renewable energy, the same as the Melbourne pool.
As a broke, early-twenties bloke who lives near the beach, I’m not sure if URBNSURF or Wiseman’s Ferry are marketed towards people like myself. I probably catch too many waves despite the over-crowding and wave-scarcity plaguing city beaches.
Geriatrics and their trophy children are more likely the cashed-up market willing to pay premiums to escape pests like myself. Sorry Gerry’s, but I think this could be good for us both.
Additionally, because two wave parks should be completed by 2023, geriatrics will be able to window-shop for the superior wave pool, prices and facilities.
Lighten up Gerry’s. You’ll have your chlorinated tubes all to yourself soon. Relish this time you have left with the circus getting repeatedly snaked and burned by the boys at Bronte.
