Santa Stuffs Safi Pits In Swell Chaser Stockings: — Some Naughty, Some Nice!
The spiked jewel of Morocco that almost killed Billy Kemper delivers seasons beatings.
Also known as ‘the head of the Snake’, Safi in Morocco is considered one of the world’s best right-hand points for the abundance of long, thick, sucky tubes that fold over its sand and rock bottom.
Home to the Safi Invitational – a surf contest that runs through the night under floodlights, and to an eponymous neighboring town renowned for producing some of the finest iron-rich red clay ceramics in Africa, Safi is the town of 250,000 that we ogled in the latest season of Red Bull No Contest.
“It’s my favorite wave in the world by far,” Morocco’s first ever CT surfer Ramzi Boukhaim told Stab. “It takes time to surf it well on the backhand. It’s a very difficult wave. When it’s good I spend 8 hours out there. I don’t come in.”
While mad sensory payoffs enchant, the head of the snake bites with plenty of venom.
In 2020, four-times Jaws winner and 2017 big-wave world champ, Billy Kemper poked the nose of his T&C into the shockey and slammed his pelvis, ribs, leg and head over a rock, resulting in a nightmare medi-evac situation that almost cost him his life. “It put things into perspective real quick,” explained Billy, who required months of extensive rehabilitation and surgeries in the aftermath.
Pre-Chrissy it went XXM for Lucas Chumbo, Dylan Longbottom, Natxo Gonzalez, Garrett McNamara, Lucas Fink, Jerome and Liam Sahyoun, Axi Muniain, Jose Carlos, Teva Bouchgua & more.
