Mikey February Offers His Third Moroccan Dispatch In As Many Weeks
“Wave selection is one thing but his approach is a dance of liquid silk and cascading spray.”
“Mikey was the best surfer here all week,” confessed Taj Burrow, referring to the South African’s showing at the recent Four Season Maldives faux contest. “He looks beautiful on any board but especially that twinny. His turns were looking so perfect, he was on point and ripping and I knew he was the one to beat.” Relive Mikey’s Thruster Division win — and subsequent Maldives tube riot — here.
Throughout Mikey Feb’s brief stint on the CT, you got the sense he knew he was living in a world already hurtling toward ruin. A comp rashy seemed a dull suit he had to button up every day just to keep his job.
Even though Mikey rips, competes hard, and eventually fell off the tour, he refuses to surf like other people who rip, compete hard, and fall off the tour. Instead, he has pawned his collar and he has no intention of returning to a corporate office cubicle.
Recently, Mikey’s been in the land of camels, dust, and medieval souks, and his latest offering, Morocco (Side 3), is the final instalment of his North African excursion.
For four minutes, Mikey planes like a serpent on a wave that seems to have no beginning or end. For the most part, you get the feeling he’s concealing his true power level, which makes for more seductive viewing than an unnecessary display of force. Mikey, like a strict but just mentor, only spanks when the wave misbehaves.
If you missed it, catch the first installments of Mikey in Morocco here, and here.
