JJF Deceives Friends Into Surfing North Shore’s Most Punishing Wave
Rawdoggin’ Haleiwa.
“I just keep telling him it’s ‘best evers’ and ‘it may not ever look like this again’,” giggles John en route to heaving Haleiwa.
Unreliable surf reports rank among the most egregious of surf sins. Ever shown up to a party dressed for a theme that doesn’t exist? Dollar-shop cowboy hat and all, only to be met with blank, quizzical stares?
That’s what it feels like to drag your carcass out of bed for “pumping surf,” only to arrive at the beach and find relentless wash-throughs detonating on the Haleiwa end bowl.
Here’s John and some of North Shore’s finest: Nathan and Ivan Florence, Luke Swanson, Kiron Jabour, Kuio Young, and Island Magic Mike all-day-marathoning a solid west swell at Haleiwa – a wave notorious for its brutal current, which drags you straight into the peak and forces a Sisyphean cycle of nonstop paddling just to stay in position.
