Is Indonesia More Perfect Than It Is Heavy?
Luke Davis explores both possibilities.
The first thing that comes to mind when surfers think of the Indonesian archipelago is perfectly tapered reef passes and conveniently angled trade winds. Usually, when planning a trip to the Indian Ocean surf mecca, we’ll watch clips of waves we dream of surfing, and imagine ourselves casually gliding through seemingly infinite tube sections.
The reality that many people overlook, however, is just how damn heavy these “perfect” waves are.
When you watch a clip like the one above, you’re watching the waves being chosen and ridden by someone who has made a career of understanding the ocean. Each enormous cylinder embodies thousands of hours spent by someone — Luke Davis in this case — learning the unlimited intricacies of the ocean, all accumulated in a single moment, for us to enjoy on a little blue screen.
It really does look perfect on camera. And it is, if you pick the right wave, and the right line, and you don’t poke your nose on the drop, or kick out a little too late. And if you don’t? Well, refer to the dry-docking at 0:59 for an example.
Luke Davis’ Vision Quest edit is a masterclass of finding perfection amidst chaos. You won’t be disappointed.
