Dion Agius Dismantled A 4X4 And Paddled Its Parts On ‘Various Canoes’ To Get Here
Riding one board, the Wasted Talent X Haydenshapes Untitled V2.
Wasted Talent is a boutique surf-skate-fashion magazine, Haydenshapes make surfboards. Together, they made a surfboard, Dion Agius rode it on the fictionally named Pingu Island.
Dion lives in Scamander, a small town on the northeast coast of Tasmania.
“It’s been a weird time for me in Taz, I’ve been going a little stir crazy,” D said. “The winters are cold here and there are no waves. I’ve been here all winter. So in-between lockdowns, we snuck over to a secret spot in NZ that rarely breaks — an island off New Zealand. We’ll call it Pingu Island, on the lee side. There’s no one around and Nick (Green) and I rented a 4×4 that we then dismantled and put on various canoes negotiating a treacherous night crossing with the stars as our navigation.”
Hold up a minute, did Dion seriously dismantle a 4WD and paddle it in parts on a canoe to get to Pingu Island?! That was stated very casually. Anyway, continue.
“We then re-assembled it and drove it overnight through a swamp to get to this mythical wave, cold and notoriously snaky. But it was fully worth it. With Covid restrictions, I was only allowed to take two boards, so I of course I chose two of my 5’6″ Untitled V2’s with signature artwork.
Jesus Christ. Can we all just take a brief moment to applaud that level of commitment for a 2:22 minute edit? He dismantled a car, put it on a fucking canoe, reassembled it, and drove across a swamp in the freezing cold for a couple of crowdless sessions. That is incredible. Whatever you are selling I am buying.
“That wave is built for a shorter fun board, tight little tubes and turns and airs, in and out under the radar. It’s kind of the ideal wave for shorter boards and that thing flies. I surfed until my little lizard wings couldn’t shuffle anymore. It was then time to head home and repeat the journey in reverse, but that my friends is a story for another time.”
Speechless.
