Are You Going On This Wave?
The Captain Fin Co. team covers all the bases, even unmakeable death-pits.
Anyone worth their salt knows that fins aren’t just randomly interchangeable plastic bits on the bottom of a surfboard. Along with rocker and foam distribution, they’re one of the elements that make the most significant difference in how a board feels under the feet of the average surfer.
However, the majority of people probably can’t look at a fin and know if it’s half-decent or not.
Because of this, most of us tend to ride fins that have been designed and tested in association with some of our favorite surfers. Mick, John John, Julian, Filipe, etc. We buy fins — at least partially — because we trust that these surfers wouldn’t put their name on a shithouse skeg.
FCS and Futures, the two titans of rudder technology, have been the main benefactors of this marketing formula, but there’s a new kid in town. His name is Captain Fin Co., and he’s already got a bunch of really cool friends.
Remember a few weeks ago, when we said Captain Fin Co. has the most culturally relevant surf team? Well, the above video is case-in-point.
Captain Fin, despite their significantly smaller budget than FCS and Futures, has compiled a crew of both progressive and traditional surfers whose surfing makes a pretty good argument that these fins work.
Dane Reynolds, Mikey February, Dion Agius, Chippa Wilson, Caity Simmers, Wade Goodall, Eithan Osborne, Joel Tudor, Tyler Warren, JJ Wessels, Andy Nieblas, are just a few of the biggest names in the above clip.
Also, Addy Giddings, a name we hadn’t heard before, impressed us with just how friendly he wants to get with the sand at the Wedge. Pure masochism.
Captain’s Logs—Volume 1 is a smorgasbord of high-tech progression and traditional trimming. Everyone you want to see doing the surfing you’ve come to expect of them. Eithan’s grab-rail cutty at 3:11 is especially high-voltage.
Maybe time for a new pair of fins, eh?
