Introducing S.U.R.F: A New Four-Part Stab TV Show, Focused On Some Of Surfing’s More Curious And Approachable Domains

Why don’t we celebrate simple things like length of ride any more?

S.U.R.F is remarkably relatable surf content.

We’d estimate that 99.7% of surfers have never surfed in a competition and 96% have never once in their life attempted an aerial, so it can be hard to identify with what we’re watching most of the time.

Many people — particularly in Byron Bay, Australia, the home of S.U.R.F — talk about resonant frequencies. Either with respect to people’s good or bad ‘vibes’ they bring to group dynamics, or with respect to Telstra’s 5G tower rollout which they alledge emits baby-mutating pulses. Seldom do they mention the discordant resonance of surf content which is the real elephant in the room that needs addressing.

S.U.R.F. is an acronym for Space, Uncovering, Resourcefulness, and Frictionless. Each word corresponds to a challenge in the four-part video series that will be released weekly beginning next Tuesday, August 17.

The four featured surfers are the true embodiment of surfing’s diverse and eclectic audience. Soli Bailey is a Byron born-and-bred competitive pro-surfer who antagonizes all Byron stereotypes and has made it to the top echelon of high-performance surfing. Ozzie Wright is an iconic surfer and artist best known for his innovative surfing and radical punk-rock aesthetic. Ari Browne, or ‘Krooky’ as his mates know him as, is a long-haired water-wizard from Lennox Head, and probably the most gifted finless surfer of his generation. And finally, Jake Vincent is a technical aerial savant who performs surfing tricks only skaters can name.

The project, brought to you by Stab and Byron Bay Brewery, offers 1,000,000 cents or $10,000 AUD to the individual who finishes with the highest aggregated point total across the four challenges.

Space is a challenge about the longest length of ride atop a board of a surfer’s choosing. It will take place at The Pass in Byron, the 1000 metre (0.6623 mile) point break that runs along Australia’s Easternmost tip.

Uncover is a challenge that requires surfers to find the best board $100 and a case of beer can buy, and then have a surfer-judged contest on them on the crowdless stretches of coast surrounding Byron.

Resourcefulness is the ‘Frankenstein’ challenge, requiring surfers to combine two broken boards and see which hybrids can be ridden the best.

Frictionless, will be the final challenge that looks at the performance of the surfers on boards without fins or rudders.

Conveniently, the abbreviation of these challenges spells S.U.R.F. which is also the name of the show.
