Now, we’re not saying that Commissioner Perrow made a doozy of a call running at Main Break. In fact, according to everyone out there, this Box session was temperamental and short-lived, but that doesn’t mean we can’t imagine what could’ve possibly been if these snaps of the Box were a little more on the frequent side.

Yesterday morning, Kieren Perrow, the WSL men’s commissioner made the call to run at the event’s primary spot – which is also the event’s least entertaining spot – Main Break.

The Box looked funky in the morning and despite it appearing semi-pumping in this photographic post-hoc insight, it was inconsistent and had exhausted all it’s offerings by the time mid-morning had swung around.

“The Box was still hungover from the previous days large swell and southerly winds. It was a bit wonky and before the sun came up it wasn’t really an option.” Tom Pearsall, the photographer who snapped the above told Stab about the early morning session

“As the sun rose, the waves cleaned up and the remnants of the previous swell threw out an hour worth of solid box numbers. But it was still a bit wonky with big widow maker south peaks trying to take everyone out. Then everything slowed right down as the day went on, by 10am it was about one wave every half an hour.”

Joel Parkinson who crept directly into Round 3 also managed to luck into a few of the Box’s rarities that morning, but he had similar things to say about the session:

“There was only a couple good waves and was crap by 10am”.

Sebastian Zietz told us “it was fun, a little slow. I don’t know if there was a enough sets for a heat.”

Despite all signs pointing towards Kieren making the right call, we can’t help but imagine, hope, and even cast our minds back to just how damn good viewing a WSL comp at The Box is. North Point might provide a more perfect park for the WSL, but for the viewers, there’s nothing more entertaining than a few top-to-bottom gurglers.

It wasn’t to be yesterday, but let’s just hope that the swell due later this week is consistent enough to hold the comp somewhere, anywhere, but Main Break.
