A Stylish South Shore Soiree With The Vans Team

The Duct Tape Festival rolls into Honolulu!

After kicking off the first Hawaiian Duct Tape Festival last year at Haleiwa, the crew at Vans spread the love to the South Shore this year, hosting the traveling circus of a surf fest at Ala Moana Beach Park yesterday.

After Wednesday night’s Shaper’s panel at Duncan Campbell’s Bonzer Front in Haleiwa, and a morning spent looking at Vans’ very, very exciting Spring ’19 line, Stab navigated downtown Honolulu the best they could, through Kaka’ako to Ala Moana Beach Park. With a plain view of Diamond Head, and against Waikiki’s glistening backdrop, the Vans team traded boards out at Bowls, with a tiny pulse of swell creeping in and a few gems over at Kaisers.

Photographers Daniel Russo, Jimmy Wilson, and Stab‘s Sam Moody hovered in the channel on surf matts, as Karina Rozunko party waved with Mason Silva, Mikey Febs did his best Buttons impression on his double-winged single fin, and Tosh and Joel Tudor traded lefts into the channel, perching noserides past Dane Reynolds and Wade Goodall fucking around on Wade’s fiberglass boogie.

Pilgrim Surf’s Chris Gentile lugged a 12’7 Joe Quick paddle board down, borrowed from the 94-year-old himself. The board won Joey Cabell his last paddle race, and had Joel Tudor hooting as he took tiny offshore runners a couple hundred yards on the red beauty.

Under tents erected on the grassy knoll across the channel, Vans’ Steve Van Doren barbecued burgers and hot dogs, which he’d grabbed from a local Haleiwa butcher the day before. Guests donned emerald green Duct Tape shirts and filled tote bags with complimentary hydroflasks, while waiting their turn at getting a wiggle on the boards the Vans team cobbled for the day, the most popular of which being Karina Rozunko’s suspiciously refined log and midlength.

A little after four, the whole party moved back to SALT in Honolulu, for sushi, garlic ahi and fried chicken, and cocktails from the well-stocked open bar, before Dylan Graves and David Malcom took the stage to introduce their new season of Dylan Graves’ most excellent travel show turned novelty surfing dream tour, Weird Waves, the episodes taking viewers to the Great Lakes during what looked like the storm of the century, as well as to meet some frothed out Midwestern river surfing fanatics.

With the crowd thoroughly lubricated, and buzzing from a beautiful day in Honolulu, California’s Shannon and the Clams took the stage and closed the event down before anyone with any gas left in the tank headed out for a night on the town in Honolulu.

Scroll south for a look at another aced Duct Tape Festival with the folks at Vans.
