Watch: The Dock 2.0

A two-ton, 160 cube floating platform, four surfers, and oddly-terrific Mexican surf.

“It’s slippery, it’s sharp, it’s scary… the thing moves like a fuckin’ viper trying to kill you,” says Dion Agius. “So it’s a pretty interesting experience.

In April, we shipped Chippa Wilson, Noa Deane, Eithan Osborne, Dion Agius, and a 160 cube, two-ton floating platform to Oaxaca, Mexico.

The goal: to reimagine The Dock, our 2017 viral hit that was met with both praise and criticism. On one hand, we were applauded and told that The Dock was the height of creativity and performance art in surfing. On the other, it was called tacky, a cheap gimmick.

But The Dock, to us, is about reimagining how a wave can be ridden. It’s about pushing ourselves and our surfers to do something that’s never been done before. The Dock is about creating a moment that looks photoshopped but isn’t and having a good time while doing so. It’s about getting four of the world’s best surfers to step off a floating platform; one that’s dangerous and whips like a snake into howling, offshore barrels.

Before traveling to Mexico, we had visions of two surfers stepping off The Dock into a split peak tube, disappearing behind left and right curtains, and perhaps (this was especially greedy) exiting in synchronicity.

This never happened.

However, the result of the Dock 2.0 was born from municipal SNAFUs and a few hard, unproductive days (but not for lack of effort). There were moments when it felt as if anything that could go wrong, would. And, there were moments of reward. Inside The Dock 2.0 there are tubes and bruises, chop-hops and rope burns. There’s technical surfing, boogie boarding, aerials and gouges. There’s fun.

That’s all we ever wanted, anyway.

Hit play for our second attempt at a paddle-less entry starring a floating dock courtesy of Candock Modular Floating Systems anchored in Mainland Mexico.
