Meaning And Nothingness With Morgan Maassen
“A sequence of no meaning, a puzzle of vignettes… like a dream…”
Do you adore Santa Barbara lensman Morgan Maassen’s heady, occasional output?
As he’s wont to do while holed up in some far-off airport lounge, stuck somewhere between there and elsewhere, MM loves to cobble disparate moments he’s captured on his travels into something compelling. Or, well, as compelling as artistically-rendered, non-surf action shots can be for the viewer.
Today, MM hit us with Fissures, a twenty minute film he calls “a sequence of no meaning, a puzzle of vignettes. like a dream…”
But also: “It’s a compendium of various moments, visions, places, like a dreamscape… But also, simply, a longform visual odyssey.”
Shot while on location in Tahiti, Maldives, Indonesia, Australia, Philippines, Mexico, France, USA, Italy, China, Chile and Greenland, the film is worth the stress test on your attention span, but also peep the fuckin soundtrack: Dirty Beaches, Kraftwerk, Johnny Greenwood, Tommy Guerrero, fucking Phillip Glass, Woo, East Village Radio, Richard Hawley, Flying Lotus, Monster Rally, and Noel Nicola.
