Josh Pomer quietly slid his newest feature, Majestic Surfing, into the public sphere on Friday and she’s more than worth a watch.

In this era of five second insta clips it’s nice to get a full length flick into which you can sink your teeth. Some of us have ample free time and real, actual, honest-to-god, attention spans. We want our surfing served in large portions and our social media feed dedicated to ogling young women who’d never give us a second look.

According to the bio in Josh’s Youtube post, Majestic Surfing is:

Starring Bobby Martinez, Dane Sealtooth Reynolds, JJ Florence, Mick Fanning and filmed over a five year period, it’s the best action surfing documentary of the year. Bobby Martinez style, grace and filthy, filthy backside wave surfing. Dane Sealtooth Reynolds power gauge attack combo air reverse grab magic. John John Florence is just WTF? at Pipeline style right tubes and huge air surfing hucks. Mick Fanning does not fight any sharks in this movie, but you will be amazed by his wave attack slight of hand. And Kelly Slater and Tom Curren – what more can be said?

Lack of shark fighting notwithstanding, it’s the pure, unadulterated Pomer we’ve come to love and expect.

How long have you been working on this video?

I don’t know. It’s seems like a direct question but, honestly, I always film when the waves are good and I hadn’t really done a surf video. action-style, in a long time. It’s been quite a while since I’ve put any effort into, you know… because everyone just does webisodes and stuff.

I just kinda missed how I used to watch surf videos and get amped before I’d go surfing. I’d watch someone’s segment and get all pumped up to shred. And I guess I just wanted that feeling. And you can get that in a good webisode, I guess, but it’s kinda fun to half a half an hour, forty minutes, of just sick shit to check out. Maybe some guys you didn’t know shred. You’ve seen, maybe, their Instagram or, I don’t know…

I’m not really social media savvy but… I don’t know. I guess I was kinda bored so I was, like, fuck, I have all this footage and it’s sick… from the last three or four winters and I might as well throw some sick old school punk rock music to it and see if I can psyched up to go throw my old man body into some backside snaps.

It’s been a while since your last full-on surf video…

I’ve been, mostly, watching my kids and shit. So I don’t have much free time.

I’ve made some just, whatever, videos, but this is the video where I tried to get some really good clips in quite a while. I did A Wedge to Remember a few years ago. I was living in Australia and I’d just got back to California and this huge swell was hitting. It was almost, “I wonder if I can make a video off just one swell?”

Because everyone was saying it was gonna be the biggest South swell in history. I was watching the news and it was just, like, more of an event. This huge swell hitting Southern California. So I wanted to check out the social aspect of this one big swell. I wasn’t trying to make the Wedge movie of all time or anything. It was just that it was kind of a swell to remember. Everywhere was firing. Even Sandspit was incredible. I was just wanted to make a slice of California life out of one swell.

That was a long time ago, but that was the last surf video I think I did.

It’s cool that this is a full length video rather than just a clip. We don’t get many of those anymore…

Yeah, totally. I showed Dane Reynolds his part and I was super nervous because I hoping he would like it. Because he’s, obviously, one of my favorite surfers of all time.

I showed it to him and he was stoked. Like, “Yeah, that was sick. How are you going to release it?”

And I was, like, “Fuck… what do you mean?”

I had no idea. Should I do five second Instagram clips for the next two years? Should I do segment by segment on Youtube?

Because, back in the day, we’d do a couple show stops, then we’d put it on VHS or DVD, you know? That would be how we released it. But now it’s, how many platforms are there? How can you connect? How savvy are you?

So I was kind of clueless. I wanted to do a little tour but I don’t think I’m going to be able to.

Why’d you decide to use Youtube?

It’s only going to be on there for a couple weeks. But, honestly, to give you the truth… I just don’t have a plan. I just like making stuff and then, when I’m done with it, I’m, like, “What do I do with this shit?”

I just pretty much make the stuff for me. Having Dane watch it on my cell phone, the parking lot at Emma Wood, was great. That was the premiere, for me.

But, like I said, I just want to get amped before I paddle out. I hope people dig it, but I didn’t have any idea what to do with it. I still don’t have any idea. If anyone has any suggestions, please, let me know.

If I could put in a plug, look for my feature documentary, The Westsiders, coming soon.
