Should We Put Deivid Silva In Stab Highway’s “Worst Heat Ever”?

February’s Comment of the Month thinks so.

In order to understand February’s winning comment, you need to understand how truly horrible the waves can get in Virginia Beach.

“Flat. Every year. Flat,” a long-time QS-warrior friend told me, looking at his shoes and shaking his head, as he purchased his plane ticket to Virginia Beach for the QS1000 event later this summer.

Despite Virginia Beach’s beauty, friendly people with fun accents, and overall safe, loving vibe — it’s swell-poor reputation held up resolutely as we traveled there six months ago to hold our “Worst Heat Ever” for Stab Highway East Coast (USA) Presented By Monster Energy. As we deliberated on Slack who would be this month’s winner, this comment (from Wilko’s Bar Tab) garnered a few emojis: “Petition to replace Ashton’s series with The Adventures of Rob and Mateus”. Here’s Rob and Mateus — a truly heartwarming and productive duo in this season’s Highway — upon Mateus’s “Worst Heat Ever” victory.

In one sentence, here’s how the “Worst Heat Ever” works: “Six pro surfers, fifteen minutes, one-foot waves, no priority, top three waves count. Length of ride, paddle battling, and claiming are heavily rewarded. At the sound of the final buzzer, we’ll tally points and declare a winner.”

When the aforementioned points were calculated by Mikey C’s shrewd abacus, it was Mateus Herdy who took top honors (though, no abacus was needed, what Mateus did to his fellow competitors was borderline cruel).

Preset to Deivid’s wave/claim.

As for World #21 Deivid Silva? The 2021 Corona Open Mexico 2021 runner up with a sinister backhand hook and respectable alley-oop that was recently revealed in Abu Dhabi has been known to cap off waves with fist pumps that would make Tiger Woods blush.
