The North Shore With Toby Mossop

“I stayed with Keanu Asing towards Foodland this time. It was good to be away from all of the parties on the front row around Pipe.”

Having never done much filming, outside the odd Gold Coast cyclone strike, Toby Mossop headed over for his annual trip to Hawaii. His intention? Return with a releasable edit. With friend and filmmaker Shannon Mackie in-toe, Mossop linked up with his connects on the North Shore, Mr Keanu Asing and John Shimooka. “I have been going to Hawaii for a few years now with my family,” Mossop told Stab. “But for the past two years, I’ve been heading over solo. I spent the last six weeks of this year there, staying with Keanu and John, which was great. The highlight was definitely watching as Keanu requalified for the 2018 tour.”

Mossop and Shannon braved the unfavourable conditions and wind sweep peaks, stockpiling just enough clips for the above edit. “For Hawaiin standards, the waves were quite poor this season, though we still had fun waves most days,” Mossop told Stab. “Shannon was super chilled to travel and film with, he spent a lot of time really working with Keanu and me. This time we stayed down towards Foodland it was good to be away from all of the parties on the front row around Pipe.”

Personally, I have never really done much filming, other than the odd day or two when a cyclone swells hit the Gold Coast. So to spend so much time with a filmer this season was surprisingly cool. I really wish we scored better sessions though, as it would have been hard for Shannon to stand on the beach and watch some of the slop we surfed. Though he still managed to make it look pretty good. The best thing about staying with a filmer is it forces you to go surfing even when the waves are bad.”
