“Shark Man” And Filmmaker Survives Attack In California’s Red Triangle!

Documentary filmmaker and “Shark Man” Ron Eliot wasn’t as lucky this time as he was with “Near Miss”!

A man was rescued today in the Red Triangle, off of Northern California’s Farallon Islands today, after being attacked by a shark on his wrist and arm.

According to ABC 7, this isn’t the man’s first dust-up with an aquatic apex predator. The survivor has been identified as Ron Eliot, “a commercial diver and documentary filmmaker who has been diving at the islands for more than 30 years, according to a NOAA Greater Farallones spokesperson.”

Elliot was filming when the attack occurred, and according to reports “was picked up from a vessel called NorCal 1 and then then transferred to Stanford Medical Center by helicopter.”

“NOAA’s spokesperson says that Elliot is reportedly doing alright and is being treated at the hospital.”

Ironically, just three months ago Eliot released “Near Miss: The Survival of a Shark Man” a documentary and  “meditative and beautiful story about the survival of a diver who is at peace with the incredible risks that he takes.”

The film premiered at the Boulder Film Festival just two short weeks ago.

According to ABC 7, “In a previous film that he was featured in, “Devil’s Teeth,” Elliot said, “I’ve been making my living diving for sea urchins since 1978. I know my wife when I first started diving out there, I knew she was wondering what would happen if something did happen to me and nobody else was on the boat. If I did get bit, the odds of somebody being there to help me are next to nil, but that doesn’t stop me from doing what I’m doing.””

We wish Eliot a swift and speedy recovery, and won’t be surprised to hear he’s back in the water, destiny-be-damned.
