Kelly Slater Inspires Aussie Golfer’s Comeback
“You can’t play it safe all the time and expect to perform at Kelly’s level or even the levels I performed at in golf.”
What can’t Kelly do?! Builds his own wavepool, wins 11x World Titles, make the semi’s at Pipe at 46, and now inspires fellow top-tier athletes to succeed!
Incase you were unaware, tearing apart surfer’s dreams in a jersey isn’t Kelly’s only hobby. He also has a golf handicap of one. And for the non-golfers, that simply means you’re pretty fucking good. Recently, Kelly played in California’s Pebble Beach Pro AM coming up against Australia’s own Adam Scott, also a former world number – in golf, of course.
Both Slats and Scott played in the same group for the first three days of competition, but both failed to make the final round. This however didn’t stop Scott – nor Kelly – from reflecting positively on the experience.
While Scott, a nimble 38-years old is eight years Kelly’s junior, he is still inspired by Kelly’s persistence and successful longevity. The youngest ever World Title winner (tied with Gabby Medina) at 20-years old and the oldest, winning his last on the threshold of 40 in 2011.
Perhaps Outerknown will branch into the stick and ball market.
“His record speaks for itself; the greatest in every sport does things no-one else can,” Scott said about Kelly after the tournament, as reported by The Sydney Morning Herald. “There are phenomenal athletes and I compared [Slater] to Tiger [Woods] in our sport for a while.
“There is a competitive drive inside and they refuse to let age hold them back.”
“It’s just a reminder, even to play golf, to win tournaments, you have to enjoy the uncomfortable spots,” Adam continued.
“You can’t play it safe all the time and expect to perform at Kelly’s level or even the levels I performed at in golf.”
And hey, even Kelly was stoked on the encounter. We’ve all looked up to Adam for a long time. To get to see them compete up close is pretty special.” Kelly said. “Adam has the most beautiful swing in golf. His errant shots are still within reason.”
Personally, I hate golf. All it ever reminds me of is the money I’ve wasted on shit dates at Holey Moley, but I digress. Perhaps an appreciation for the gentleman’s game comes with maturation and hairline degradation.
