Cyclone Oma Just Keeps Getting Better

Parko threads on a single fin, Jack Freestone holds MVP status and more from day two on the Gold Coast.

Weekend warriors rejoice.

As of tomorrow the lot of you will be able to share the freeways and lineups. Just in time for the locals and upper echelon, who’ve been lighting it up the past forty-eight odd hours, to tap out with satisfaction.

Since Oma’s debut yesterday, those with schedules that don’t involve regular ‘work’ have had their fill, particular GC royalty, Jack Freestone, Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning. If you have social media, you already know what we’re talking about.

Throughout the day tales surfaced from northern zones, Noosa in particular (which looked kinda tasty!), and a few from the Byron region, but most of the hype continued to focus on the Coolangatta stretch.

While yesterday was a story of sunshine and disjointed guillotines, from the get-go today was blustery, mostly overcast and lining up immaculately from the Kirra groin onwards.

A freakishly small crowd had first dibs. Most of those with the foresight to paddle on first light stumbled on takeoffs, leaving a tragic amount unridden. Thankfully Joel, Mick, Jack, Mitch Crews, Soli Bailey, Brenno Dorrington, Laura Enever and more from a similar paygrade were in place to capitalise.

Joel Parkinson rode an Ian Byrne single fin. The same one he won around a month ago during the single fin classic. He threaded the thing like a king, every line adjustment oozing with grace and intention. He took it through many tubes.

You’ve already seen Jack Freestone’s wave of a lifetime, ten seconds of pure unadulterated thrills. Well, that wasn’t the only one he jagged. Jack’s looking like taking Oma MVP crown if he keeps it up.

As the day moved on, fuel was digested (for both bodies and skis), low tide passed and it turned back on, the content from which is still receiving colour corrections and barber shop trims as we scroll.

Keep an eye peeled and you’ll see plenty more over the coming days as Oma continues stirring up the Tasman.

If you’re yet to get your feet wet, there’s hope for you this weekend – if you can hold onto your sanity.
