It was just after midday on Saturday when a woman walking along Old Lighthouse Beach spotted an abandoned surfboard bobbing in the lineup, it’s owner, Buxton local Jordan Bartholomew was discovered shortly after, unconscious, still attached to his legrope. The two surfers first to arrive pulled Jordan to shore and immediately began resuscitation on the 32 year-old, reported The Island Free Press. Allegedly Jordan had been surfing a pleasant north east swell down the beach away from the main crowd when the incident occurred. The Dare County EMS, the Sheriff’s office, Hatteras Island Rescue Squad, and National Park Service staff rushed to assist however attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful and ‘Greenhorn’ – as his pals called him – was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Bartholomew was well known in the area as an enthusiastic surfer who also loved to point a lens here and there. He also suffered from a number of medical ailments, as noted in the caption attached to one of his short edits:

“My name is Jordan Bartholomew aka Greenhorn, I have autism, epilepsy, ADHD, crohn’s disease, degenerative arthritis, asthma, and maybe MS. I live on Hatteras Island of the outer banks, I am from Ohio and started surfing in 2007. …..this is what I do to stay healthy and sane (sorta) – my therapy.”

While it appears he drowned, the true cause of death is unknown considering his medical condition.

Stab offers its deepest condolences to Jordan’s family and friends.
