The first Wavegarden in North America opens next month

Austin, Texas. Bring your 10 gallon hat!

Now that SXSW is over, the next big thing to hit Austin, Texas is a Wavegarden. As we’re all still drooling over Kelly’s wave, that thing wouldn’t fly in Texas. Kelly’s wave looks perfect but the reality is it’s a fast paced reeler, and would result in injury for the Austin-folk. The Wavegarden’s set to open its doors as soon as next month, which as always, is coming up faster than anyone could imagine. The 160 acre park will feature a 13-acre lagoon along with lodging, restaurants, a retail shop and a conveniently placed surf school… must be nice to learn to surf without variables.

Doug on a tear!

Doug Coors, of the Coors family, you know, the cans that turn blue? Well, he’s front-running this project. The Coors family is worth a cushy 4 bill and apparently Dougy boy’s been on a 15 year journey to discover a wave technology that mimics a perfect break.

We haven’t had any Wavegarden hype in quite some time, that Slater guy shot that down for eager surfers. Remember when the Wavegarden looked fun? It still does, although it’s not a tunneling, murky right, we’d still hit it and flow the puppy all day.

In other manmade news: Surf Snowdonia has reopened it’s doors in Wales with new additions for family fun, such as a blob! Hell, if there’s a blob, fuck the wave, find the most portly patron and have him/her blast you off (wink).

“We have such a strong surf culture in America and Wavegarden’s technology is going to add a lot of value here, especially in places like Austin where people love sport and the outdoors,” explained Coors to World Surf Cities Network.

This is set to be the first public Wavegarden in North America. “Historically, surfing has been limited to those lucky enough to have access to the coastline,” explained Josema Odriozola, Wavegarden’s Founder and CEO. “Formerly, to go surfing required a beach, daylight and specific swell and weather conditions. Now, with our technology we can provide an authentic surfing experience far away from the ocean. And we are extremely proud to have Austin as our first project in the USA, this is a significant milestone for our company.”
