Six claims on day six of competition

There’s no denying that Margies was fucking boring to watch online. In fact, it had seemed as though the blandness of that event had rolled over into the first two rounds of Bells. Fortunately for us, all changed on day six at the Rip Curl Pro. John John Florence got the first 10 point ride of the year and Jordy made it rain on Torquay.

Since we already know y’all were glued to your screens all day watching, we decided to throw six wild claims against the wall and see if any stick…

1. Gabs Medina will still be in the number one spot after this event.

2. Slater’s lost six percent of his Jeux De Vie since leaving Quiksilver, or maybe it’s just that his boards look weird with no Quik stickers on.

3. Owen Wright’s clearly got the best backhand on tour. Gabs has got a better air game, but his turns and flow ain’t as good.

4. Everyone else’s turns look small compared to Jordy’s. Like, WAY smaller.

5. Besides a few shitty results, John John Florence is the best surfer in the world. He’s the most exciting surfer to watch at Bells, too.

“It feels so good to win and I’m really happy,” said John. “I was pretty nervous going into the heat, it was scary to come up against Kelly and Gabriel. I got that first wave and forgot about the nerves. I took off, I saw the section coming and just flew to the air, the wind caught and spun me around perfectly. 6. Micro validated the fact he was stiffed out of a wildcard spot. First, he took out Bourez, then stuck it to Kelly with an 8.57.

7. They’ve finally stopped over scoring Joel. But, he is fucking tearing.

“In most of the events I’ve surfed so far I’ve taken a while to get into the rhythm, but I love the Bell and I’m three Heats away from it,” said Joel. “Three more wins, six more waves, I’m just going to keep it simple.” ASP/Cestari/Getty Images

8. Taj riding a JS don’t look right. It’s like Slater riding a Mt. Woodgee.

“There are some really good waves at home in WA right now, but I wouldn’t be anywhere else right now,” said Taj, pictured here on a Mayhem. “The waves here have been really good and I’ve managed to get on a bit of a roll that hopefully I can keep it going.” ASP/Kirstin/Getty Images

9. That big punt Filipe did got underscored. He thought so too, as did his dad, and trusted confidant, Gabs Medina.

10. The best thing the ASP did for this event was get Occy back in the mix.
