Read the deep dive on the life of Mikala Jones here.

Hawaiian surfer Mikala Jones has reportedly died after severing his femoral artery in his groin and suffering massive blood loss. The 44-year-old was staying at Awera Resort in the Mentawais when the incident occurred.

Mikala leaves behind a young family and siblings Malia, Keoni and Daniel Jones, also incredible former pro surfers.

Despite being born and raised on Rocky Point in Hawaii, Mikala also had an innate connection to Indonesia. In the early 2000s, he made the move to Bali, where he embarked on a quest to discover unexplored surf spots. Mikala’s explorations yielded numerous discoveries, uncovering waves that remained unknown to the world, always prioritizing their preservation over personal recognition.

He was a true trailblazer with a GoPro, documenting surfing in ways that had never been seen before, always without revealing spots.

Mikala landed dozens of surf magazine covers from around the world, his TSJ shot with his reflection in the face of the wave was the highwater mark for POV work at that point. Because he toggled back and forth between Bali and Hawaii, he essentially had no off season.

It’s hard to imagine another 44 year old who has been so barrelled.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

We’ll have a longer report and proper celebration of his life coming.
