This afternoon the fickle New Jersey wind flipped offshore and the surf turned the fuck on. The breeze kicked the swell into submission and hollow fare was served up to those fortunate enough to get into the water. “It was really fun today,” Balaram Stack tells Stab. “It wasn’t huge or anything but it was perfect. There’s been waves for a week and half which is so rare for here. But today we finally got barreled. The wind turned offshore around 2:30, the tide started to fill back in and it was pumping. It was only shoulder head high but I was getting like four-five second barrels. Hopefully this hurricane doesn’t hit us though. They still don’t know where it’s going to hit but it’s supposed to hit somewhere…”

“It was offshore and clean, good conditions,” Volcom team rider Pat Schmidt tells Stab after a long day of shared tunnels with the locals. “It was a little closed out on the low tide but you could definitely make it out of some. This swell is kind of crazy because it’s so long, we usually don’t get waves for such an extended amount of time. It’s just been non-stop waves everyday and there’s more in the forecast!” Pat concludes as he rides up to join Balaram Stack, Andrew Doheny and Noa Deane in New York. The tropical storm has the potential to really light up the coast of NY over the weekend.

“New Jersey’s been getting a lot of swell ever since the fall season officially kicked off” lensman Mike Incitti tells us. “However, the winds haven’t been in our favor. It’s been hard to figure out where the best waves are breaking. For all east coast surfers, fall is about surfing at home with friends. Driving around to look for the best waves only gets us frustrated. The best plan is to just paddle out at our home break and wish for the best. And never…ever leave waves to find waves. Especially in the fall when conditions are so volatile on the east coast.”

With more swell in the forecast the east coast will be doing it’s thing throughout the weekend, as long as the weather stays favourable.  And we hope Hurricane Joaquin doesn’t cause any serious damage to the coastal communities.
