Peʻahi Pumps In Wake Of Marcio Freire’s Passing
And everyone gets barrelled.
There’s a phenomenon that’s been observed by many a watchful surfer. When someone of significance in the surfing community passes, the ethereal forces of the ocean often send a farewell swell.
When Andy Irons passed, the North Shore pumped perfection for 2 weeks straight. When Brock Little passed, the Eddie ran in 2016 due to an enormous pulse. Etc, etc, etc.
Last week, Jaws paddle pioneer and generally revered madman Marcio Freire tragically drowned while paddling Nazare. This week, Jaws saw some of the best conditions it’s seen in a long time.
All of the usual suspects — Billy Kemper, Albee Layer, Torrey Meister, Nate Florence — showed up, and everyone went hard.
Notably, SEOTY entrant Kai Paula stroked his way into a proper Peʻahi keg, even though his first time on a board over 6’8 was two weeks ago.
In his Instagram post, Albee promised us that a full edit of the day will be coming soon.
We’re looking forward to it.
