North Point Is Tailor-Made For The Oop

“Dream case scenario!” – Julian Wilson.

What a mixed bag the second CT stop has been. Competition was held for the first time ever at North Point where Sea Bass snuck out of that impossible ten pointer, The Box squared out, then Margies went all XXL and John Florence made it look frighteningly simple. Conditions have since turned unfavourable and we’ve been left with an Instagram feed full of fishing, beverage tasting and assorted selfies from our procrastinating pals in pro surf. During those more eventful days at the opening end of the window, some impressive freesurfing did take place in and around the event’s epicentre, particularly over at North Point.

While we enjoy watching a game of hide and go seek go down at The Box, there’s just more on offer at North Point. The preferred waves hollow out early on, then run through to the inside providing an elevator to the heavens. It’s the ultimate combination opportunity. Remember Jordy Smith’s? To this day, his tube to oop remains debatably one of the best ever captured.

Aware that conditions were right and an international high performance spectacle was going down, local lensman Ryan Robson posted up in front to freeze some moments. He saw a grey-suited Julian Wilson jamming down the line towards the end bowl, aimed, fired and the result now lives above.

So, what is it about North Point that encourages the natural footers to spin to the right? We asked Jules for his thoughts.

“North Point is one of the best set-up’s you could ask for if you wanted to work on alley-oops,” he replied. “It’s hard to get repetition when it comes to sections and speed and steepness, but North point provides that. Throw on top of that the fact it’s consistently over four foot and the predominant wind blows straight into you… dream case scenario!”
