Ryan Callinan, Nobby’s Beach, NSW
A little over two months ago, Ryan Callinan blazed an air over a Balinese shore pound during the Oakley World Pro Junior, landed on the backwash and snapped his right fibula, one of the two shin bones (on his leading leg, no less). After seven weeks in a cast and a couple more in a rehab boot, Ryan went surfing on a single fin and, though the leg felt a little precarious, he loved being back in the water. Fast-forward a week or so, and Ryan tells his friends that he’s still gonna ‘take it easy’. But, excited as he’s been to get back in the water, he’s been blasting hits like this with, as it’d seem, little regard for the healing bone. You can’t stop the rush.
