Photolyfe: Kerby Brown

Welcome to PhotoLyfe, in which Stab’s favourite photographers answer questions about themselves with their own images. It’s that old picture-tells-a-thousand-words chestnut but with more colour and pop. It’s a way to cut out all the bullshit. It’s like jacking into the main vein of those who supply us with exquisite surf imagery every day. Give thanks by studying each image with a more careful eye than ever! Kerby Brown purchased his first camera (a Nikon with 10.5mm fisheye and housing) about seven years ago, with the goal in mind to hold it while riding through the ledgy barrels that he so often has around home in West Oz. “It didn’t take long before I started swimming and shooting empty waves, my brother and friends as well and from that moment on I was hooked,” says Kerby. “These days I have to juggle surfing and shooting as I’m passionate about both. If the waves are big and heavy I’ll be surfing 100 percent. If it’s on the smaller playful side I’ll grab my camera. Sometimes if it’s pumping I’ll surf and then shoot, or vice versa, unless I’m doing both at the same time, getting hand held shots, which is only on very select days. I don’t tend to shoot as many POV-style shots these days since every man and his dog is flooding the web with GoPro selfies, but as long as I’m in the water I’m happy.” Get at Kerby’s site here, FB here and IG here. 1.
