Oceanside International Film Festival will be presenting a 20th Anniversary screening of Blue Crush at the Brooks Theatre on Tuesday, February 22, at 6:00pm, followed by a Q&A with Director John Stockwell, to kick off Film Week in Oceanside.

Blue Crush was an ambitious film to shoot in the early 2000s amidst the complexities of surf culture, but today it stands as a milestone achievement in both filmmaking technique and subject matter. A production that sent cultural ripples through its landscape, the film empowered millions of young women across the planet, and entire industries were inspired as a result. Young-women-targeted apparel lines were developed by major surf brands, and tens of thousands more young women learned to surf. Global surf brands that focused for decades on young men started their own female-targeted lines. To this day, the sport’s inclusiveness and image experiences changes brought upon by this film’s release.

In fact, just last week, women had their first elite-level surfing event at Pipeline. Which just goes to show how ahead of its time Blue Crush really was.

The film starred an emerging cast featuring Kate Bosworth, Michelle Rodriguez, Sanoe Lake, Matthew Davis, Mika Boorem, Faison Love, plus a whole host of surfers including Kala Alexander, Tamayo Perry, Fred Patacchia Jr., Keala Kennelly, Rochelle Ballard, Kate Skarratt, Layne Beachley, Megan Abubo, Brian Keaulana, Brock Little, Kai Garcia, Tom Carroll, Jamie O’Brien, Bruce Irons, Braden Dias, Kalani Robb, Makua Rothman, and a very young Coco Ho.

In attendance at the 20th Anniversary Screening will be Blue Crush Director John Stockwell, who will provide an in-depth conversation with the audience after the screening on the film’s massive cultural impact, complete with an audience Q&A.

Doors at the Brooks Theater, located at 217 N Coast Hwy, Oceanside, CA 92054, will open at 5:30pm with the film starting at 6pm.

The Oceanside International Film Festival will be screening films at the Brooks Theatre from February 22nd through February 27th. Visit www.osidefilm.org for tickets and more information.
