The Many Side Effects Of Surfing

There are many side effects of surfing.

Like how it requires you to walk away from your phone, computer, tablet, or whatever you’re staring at right now. And no, no, no. We’re not gonna go down the trodden path about how healthy that may be. How freeing it is. Nature, dolphins, endorphins. You know the drill.

That’s probably all true, but also the internet is fucking great. They got everything you want on there — you can literally buy dolphins if you look in the right/wrong places. Don’t, though. It’s mean.

So let’s flip it. Instead of talking about leaving the world behind when you jump in the water, let’s talk about returning to the world when you come in.

Things can change while you surf. Massively, minimally, or somewhere in between. There’s something quite fun about going surfing when you’re expecting a positive text or email or naked photograph in the near future — oftentimes, you come in and it’s there!

When something important happens while you’re surfing, the memory of that session can bind to whatever that way more important thing is. Years later, the session might even provide you with extra context that helps unlock even more details of the memory — or at least whatever details your brain feels like adding to it at that point. Suddenly, you have access to more feelings and information. All because you decided to paddle out for 35-minutes on a Tuesday in 3-foot onshore waves.

Ain’t that something?

Craig Anderson On Starting Businesses, Personal Evolution, And A Surf Edit’s Ability To Shape Our World
You don’t hear much from Craig — or at least not as much as you should. Stab Founder, Sam McIntosh, figured Craig/Kai Neville’s latest short film, Ceremony, presented a fine opportunity for a wide-ranging chat. And now we’re all the wiser for it.

Watch: Everything & All — The Peter Mel Story
Sit down. Brings snacks. Hydrate! And enjoy this award-winning 30-minute Stab Original film. It hasn’t won any awards yet, but I think it will — it will definitely change the way you look at and/or hear the voice of Peter Mel, though.

We’d Take This 3-Board Timmy Patterson Quiver Anywhere In The World (But Especially Indo)
Do you like to read about surfboards? Do you like to win free surfboards? Do you like to read about — and then win — surfboards that might make you feel like our 2019 World Champion and 2021 (“2020,” I guess) Olympic Gold Medalist? If yes then, oh boy, do we have something for you.

Surfers Can (Help) Change The World
But for real. We can. Sean Doherty, Lauren Hill, Peter Whish-Wilson, and Dave Rastavich are here to explain how. This was originally published as a Stab Premium piece, but then we felt bad about tucking this information away from non-subscribers, so we freed it up. Great read no matter where it lives, though.

The Eurozone Crisis
In 2009, statistically speaking, half of all WCT Round 1 heats would feature a Flores, a Picon, a Bourez, a Pires, a Lipke, an Aranburu, or a Boal. With only two European surfers left, Paul Evans asks where all the new talent is in the old world.

Comment of the week:

This was in response to that Eurozone article. And he’s onto something here, isn’t he?

One last thing:
Sunny skies make waves look 10% better whereas stormy skies make waves look 30% worse.
